A fresh plan for Women's health

A fresh plan for Women's health Main Image

A Dean Winter Labor Government will invest in services that meet the needs of Tasmanian women and deliver a much needed Fresh Start for women’s healthcare in Tasmania

Labor will put more services in Tasmanian towns and suburbs to take pressure off our hospitals and GPs.

Labor will:

  • Provide additional funding for free, specialised women’s and reproductive health clinics around the state.
  • Establish new clinical guidelines for the treatment of women presenting to EDs with abdominal pain
  • Expand prenatal checks to regional hospitals

Labor has listened to Tasmanian women right across our State. A Labor government will invest in healthcare that genuinely meets the needs of Tasmanian women.

  • Access to women’s health GP appointments around the state is getting harder by the day.
  • Women in regional areas are required to travel long distances to receive the care they need, like women’s health and prenatal appointments.
  • Too many women are sent home from Emergency Departments, their concerns not fully investigated or taken seriously enough.

The details

A Dean Winter Labor Government will:

  1. Deliver free, specialised women’s and reproductive health clinics at regional hospitals and health centres across Tasmania, with a $2 million commitment to Family Planning Tasmania. This additional funding will allow Family Planning Tasmania to extend its reach significantly, running fortnightly women’s health clinics in places like Kingston, Sorell, Ulverstone, Scottsdale, Queenstown and other areas across the state. The locations will be consulted and determined by working with community and will be gradually expanded to multiple locations around the state.

  2. Establish new clinical guidelines for the treatment of women who present to Emergency Departments with abdominal pain, birth trauma, miscarriage or cardiovascular symptoms.

  3. Provide Women’s Health Tasmania with an additional $500,000 annually, to restore and continue health promotion work.

  4. Immediately adopt BreastScreen Australia’s national policy to inform all women after a mammogram if they have high breast density requiring further screening and expand breast screen services around the state.

  5. Expand prenatal checks to regional hospitals, allowing expectant mums to get their prenatal check closer to home - saving time, money and reducing stress.

  6. Enable Tasmanian community pharmacists to prescribe and supply hormonal contraception for Tasmanian women and girls aged 16 and older.

  7. Ensure better continuity of care throughout pregnancy, by expanding places in the Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) model of care.

  8. Build a new Mother and Baby Unit at St John’s Park that provides specialist mental health care focused on the mental and physical health of new mums, without them having to leave their baby at home while they get the support they need.

  9. Support the priorities of the Tasmanian Sexual and Reproductive Health Collaborative Group Strategic Framework 2024-2030 to inform decisions and actions on sexual and reproductive health in Tasmania.

  10. Ensure public access to medical and surgical terminations of pregnancy.

  11. Support the priorities of the Tasmanian Sexual and Reproductive Health Collaborative Group Strategic Framework 2024-2030 to inform decisions and actions on sexual and reproductive health in Tasmania.
