Key Points
A Dean Winter Labor Government will deliver a fresh start for cost-of-living relief for Tasmanians by freezing the cost of car and motorcycle registration and halving it for apprentices.
Labor will keep a lid on household costs and help families get on top of their big expenses.
Labor will provide half price car or motorcycle registration for apprentices.
A Labor Government will:
- Freeze car and motorcycle registration costs
- Halve the cost of registration for apprentices
- Deliver a fresh start on cost of living
Why we need it
After 11 years of the Liberals, the cost of everything just keeps going up and up.
Car registration renewal costs have increased more than $70 in the past four years for a standard six-cylinder vehicle.
At a time when the cost of living is the highest it has ever been, the Liberal Government has offered little more than empty promises and assurances that we have never had it so good.
It’s time for a fresh start on the cost of living.
“Tasmanians need cost of living relief. Labor will help keep a lid on household costs.”
The details
A Dean Winter Labor Government will freeze car and motorcycle registration at the current cost. The freeze will apply to all household cars and motorcycles, for
12 months.
The freeze will be implemented by automatically rebating the increase scheduled for 1 December on the registration of eligible vehicles.
In addition, Labor will deliver half price car registration for apprentices for the next 12 months. This will provide even more cost of living relief to young Tasmanians and help to encourage more young people to take up or complete an apprenticeship at a time when numbers are falling sharply.
This policy will save Tasmanians money at a time when they need it most.
We will use part of the funds from a special dividend from the Motor Accidents Insurance Board (MAIB) to fund this important cost-of-living measure.
