A Dean Winter Labor Government will restore Metro and make it more transparent and accountable to Tasmanians.
A Labor Government will establish a Public Transport Advisory Board to advise the government on issues such as service needs, disability access, the needs of young people and students, and public safety.
The Advisory Board will:
- Review the role and powers of transit officers
- Address bus driver retention
- Ensure buses are getting to Tasmanians who need them most
Why we need it
Affordable, accessible public transport is vital to keeping communities connected. But after 11 years under the Liberals, over 100 services a day have been cut, with no restoration on the horizon.
Meanwhile, drivers and passengers feel unsafe when safety screens and transit officers haven’t been rolled out as promised. Nobody should have to fear for their safety simply for doing their job. The situation is a direct result of a government that has failed to act when it comes to driver safety.
It’s time for a Fresh Start for Metro.
The details
A Dean Winter Labor Government will establish a Public Transport Advisory Board to advise the government on issues such as service needs, disability access, the needs of young people and students, and public safety.
This Board will be immediately tasked with:
- Reviewing the best way of ensuring transit officers have the power to detain and issue infringement notices.
- Ensuring our bus drivers feel safe and are adequately protected when they are at work.
- Address the issues around bus driver retention.
- Public transport needs across Tasmania to ensure bus routes are providing transport services to those Tasmanians that need them the most.
- How to increase transparency and accountability of decisions relating to routes and service levels.
Further, Labor will act urgently to deploy fully trained, empowered transit officers across key transit hubs.
