Craig Farrell MLC
Member for Derwent
Craig Farrell is the Member for Derwent and President of the Legislative Council.
Born in Scottsdale, Craig is proud student of the public education system. He attended school in Scottsdale and completed his studies at Alanvale College in Launceston.
Craig resides in New Norfolk with his wife, Lee. Craig and Lee have four children and seven grandchildren, all whom live within the greater Derwent Valley.
With a real heart for community, Craig feels privileged to represent the diversity of the people of the Derwent electorate and to have opportunity to celebrate the region’s great offerings.
Craig has a long history of contributing to his community. He is a volunteer and member of many organisations across the Derwent electorate; in particular, he is a proud and active member of the local Lions and Rotary Club.
With a passion for media and communications, Craig is a driving force behind the Derwent Valley Community Radio Station, TYGA FM. Craig is a board member and hosts a weekly music program.
Craig has diverse range of interests including railways and transport, music, regional tourism, travel and small business development. Craig’s knowledge and enthusiasm in such areas of interest are an asset to an electorate rich in culture and history.
Reflecting his community focus, Craig served as a Derwent Valley Councillor between 2002 and 2011, including in the role of Deputy Mayor between 2009 and 2011.Craig’s community values have moulded his working history. He is thankful for his employment opportunities including a long career in television both behind and in front of the camera, a career in real estate and the role of Electorate Adviser to Labor stalwart, Dick Adams.
Craig was elected to the Legislative Council seat of Derwent in May 2011. Across his years in parliament, Craig has performed several roles including ministry roles, Deputy Leader of Government in the Legislative Council and Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council.
In 2019, Craig was elected President of the Legislative Council. A position appointed by fellow Legislative Councillors, Craig is responsible for maintaining order of the House, interpreting the practices and overall procedures and maintenance of the House.
As President, Craig is the sole representative of the House to engage with the Governor. Craig is required to undertake ceremonial duties including the opening of Parliaments, hosting visits from foreign Heads of State and foreign delegations and liaison with other state parliaments.
With a wealth of social and political knowledge, Craig is highly respected for his commitment to the people of Derwent.
